Quantitative assessment of mitral valve area by continuous Doppler echocardiography

Abstract
|
|
|
We compared the mitral valve area measured by a continuous Doppler echocardiography (MVAe) with that measured by cardiac catheterization(MVAc) and that measured directly on section paper after mitral valve replacement(MVAd) in 9 patients with mitral stenosis in order to determine the utility and accuracy of continuous Doppler echocardiography in estimation of the mitral valve area.
Results were as follows.
1) There were relatively significant correlations between MVAe(0.77t 0.13 cnt : Mt SD) and MVAd(0.73± 0.23 ad) and between MVAe and MVAc(0.87t 0.38 all) and between MVAe and MVAc(0.87t 0.38 cn). (r=0.81, 0.70, P<0.01, <0.05, respectively)
2) MVAe tended, to overestimate MVAc in patients with pure mitral stenosis, but to underestimate MVAc in patients with mitral stenosis with mitral or aortic insufficiency.
